Soil to Plate – Free Gardening Course at Caldmore Community Garden

When: The sessions will take place every 4th Monday of the month.

Start: Monday 24th April 2017 at 1-3pm

Join us for a new gardening course at Caldmore Community Garden.

The course will generally cover ground preparation, planting and seed sowing plus maintenance of plants and gardens.
For those that want to learn or improve their gardening skills and knowledge but are not interested in gaining an accredited qualification.
• Preparing the Ground
• Planting Seeds/Plants
• Maintaining Plants Outdoors, weeding, watering, mulching
• Plant, weed, pest and disease identification
• Composting

This course will be delivered to cater for absolute beginners and those experienced gardeners within the community. We will be looking at food and herb production as well as wildlife and ornamental gardening. Learning tips and pointers from Jonathan Ensell an award winning garden designer and lecturer with 24 years of gardening experience.

Session Number One Starts on Monday the 24th April 2017 – We will be covering ground clearance and preparation. It’s all about getting over the first hurdle in gardening.

Women’s Tuesdays – Learn how to cook Malaysian food

As a part of Women’s Tuesdays we are starting Cooking Workshops and Recipe exchange – join us every Tuesday for two hours of cooking together, chatting and of course sharing a meal at the end!

The idea is that each of us leads on session, teaching others how to cook a dish from her culture. It can be sweet or savoury, invented by you or passed on from generation to generation…

The atmosphere is great and you will have eager helpers and a budget to pay for ingredients. So why not join Women’s Tuesdays?

Come on down and find out what it is all about! We will be throwing the doors open on the Men’s Shed project in Caldmore Community Garden. We aim to fire up the wood fired pizza oven and making pizza for sharing in the great outdoors. We will be opening up the Shed and talking about the things we want to achieve as a group as well looking for your ideas for the project. Pizza and festive refreshment provided. Entrance free, everyone welcome, men and women alike all ages welcome. Come and find out what we are about.

When: Sunday 16th October 2016 at 7-9pm

Czech Film Night showing Empties (Vratné lahve), a 2007 comic love story about a man who refuses to accept that old age is empty of love, meaning and value to society.

Josef Talon is a middle-aged lit teacher who grows exhausted from instructing his demanding, occasionally obnoxious students, and opts to take a hike – into an early retirement. Though his wife, Eliska, continues to tolerate his insensitivity, Josef quickly recognises his own need.

The screening will take place in the Community House in the Garden. Hot drinks will be served, but you can bring your own drinks and snacks.

Autumn Fun for all ages:

– Apple Pie Competition
Make your favourite apple pudding and win a prize!
Pies to be delivered by 1pm, judging will take place at 1.30pm.
– Autumn arts & crafts
– Bulb planting
– Prepare the garden for winter
– Community cafe: hot and cold drinks and apple delicacies (apple pie tasting after the competition at 2pm)
– Pizzas straight from our pizza oven

Learn how to grow plants for seed
Keep your varieties pure
Extract and preserve your seed with minimal equipment!

The workshop is free and lunch is provided

It is part of the Growing from Your Roots project funded by the Big Lottery Heritage Lottery Fund. This project preserves our heritage of growing and using multicultural food crops in Birmingham and beyond.
